Marriage Licencing

​​​​​Congratulations on your Upcoming Wedding! 

Marriage licences are issued through the Clerks Department at the Municipal Office located at 2585 King Road, King City, during regular office hours. (Please note our new address effective October 2018).

Appointments are required and may be booked by calling (905) 833-5321. Please allow 30 minutes for the issuance of your marriage licence. 

2020 Fee:    $172.50 (tax exempt) and may be paid by Cash, Interac, Visa or MasterCard.

Applicants must complete the Marriage Licence Application Form​ and bring the necessary identification (original valid pieces, photocopies or scanned documents are not accepted).  A Marriage Licence is valid for use anywhere in the Province of Ontario for a period of 90 days from the date of issuance. 

It is essential for you to know the date and location of where you plan to get married in order to process the marriage licence.

Requirements to Obtain a Marriage Licence:

  • At least one applicant to the proposed marriage must apply in person.
  • The completed Marriage Licence Application must be signed and dated by both applicants.
  • Please ensure that all sections of the application are complete, including the Religious Denomination. If you do not wish to specify a religion, please fill in "Non-Denominational".
  • Any person who is at least 18 years of age may marry.
  • Applicants who are 16 or 17 years of age are required to submit a completed Consent of Parent or Guardian to Marriage Form signed by both parents (or legal guardians)  when making application for a marriage licence. 
  • Two (2) original valid pieces of identification confirming name, birth date and signature, must be shown for both applicants.  We will not accept photocopies or scanned documents.  Identification may be from any country, as long as it is government issued, original and valid.  

  • Documents presented in a language other than English must be supported by a translation by an authorized translator.


​First piece of identification must be one of the following:

Birth Certificate
Current Passport with photo
Record of Immigrant Landing
Canadian Citizenship Card

Second piece of identification must be photo identification, which can be one of the following, provided not used as first piece of identification:

​Driver’s License
Current Passport with photo
Ontario Photo Card (purple photo ID card)​
Permanent Residency Card
Nexus Card


Previously Married?

If you or your partner are currently divorced, we require the original Candian divorce certificate or a court certified copy of same. A divorce judgement is NOT ACCEPTABLE.  

Foreign Divorces 

Please contact the Office of the Registrar General for more information regarding requirements for obtaining a Marriage Licence when a Foreign Divorce has taken place.  You must obtain documentation from the Office of the Registrar General prior to applying for an Ontario Marriage Licence.  

If the foreign decree is in a language other than English, a certified translation must also be provided.​

Civil Marriage Ceremonies

Civil marriage ceremonies are performed on Fridays between the hours of 12:00 pm and 3:00 p.m. Ceremonies are performed within the Council Chambers for limited numbers of guests, and are typically 30 minutes in duration. 

2020 Fee: $282.00 (tax exempt) and may be paid by Cash, Interac, Visa or MasterCard.​ 

Both applicants are required to attend a pre-consultation meeting with the Marriage Officiant  at least one week prior to the ceremony. Contact the Clerks Department at 905-833-5321 for availability of dates. Please review the guidelines below for more information:

Already Married and Want to Apply for Your Marriage Certificate?

Eight to ten weeks following your marriage ceremony you may apply online with the Office of the Registrar General for your marriage certificate or check the status of an application for a marriage certificate.
