King Township will start a routine watermain swabbing operation for properties north of King Road from October 21 to October 25. This essential maintenance procedure helps to enhance water quality by clearing sediment buildup within the watermains.

What is watermain swabbing?
Watermain swabbing involves inserting a foam swab into the watermain through a fire hydrant. The swab, slightly larger than the watermain itself, is pushed through the pipe using water pressure. As it moves along, the swab removes accumulated sediment, which helps to maintain water clarity and quality. This process is typically done every 5 to 10 years.

Scheduled service interruptions
The swabbing will occur during daytime hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents and businesses in affected areas will experience temporary water service interruptions during this time.

Affected residents and businesses will receive hand-delivered notices outlining the specific dates and times of service interruptions, typically 48 hours before work is scheduled to begin.

Preparing for watermain swabbing
Residents are advised to take the following precautions before swabbing begins:

  • Fill clean containers with tap water for drinking and cooking and store them in the fridge.
  • Complete any dishwashing, laundry, or other water-using activities before the scheduled swabbing time.
  • Fill your bathtub with water for household use. You can use a pail to transfer water from the bathtub to your toilet for flushing.
  • Turn off the main water shut-off valve located near your water meter to prevent any accidental water use during the swabbing process.

During swabbing
Avoid using water for any purpose while the swabbing is underway.

After swabbing
Once the swabbing is complete for the day:

  • Turn your main water valve back on and run the cold water tap nearest to your water metre (typically in the basement) until the water runs clear.
  • If your home has a water softener, bypass it by running water through an outdoor tap or garden hose.
  • If the water remains discoloured after 10 minutes, stop flushing, wait an hour, and try again. If the problem persists for more than two hours, contact the Township of King for assistance at 905-833-5321.

Water pressure issues
If you experience lower-than-normal water pressure after the maintenance, check if the issue is isolated to one tap or throughout your home. If it's only at one tap, clean the aerator screen and flush the water until it clears. For more widespread issues, contact the Township for support.

Environmental impact
You may notice red or brown water being discharged into catch basins or nearby environments during the process. This is caused by the iron deposits in the watermains, which are flushed out during swabbing. While the water may look discoloured, it poses no harm to the environment. All discharged water is treated, and chlorine is removed before being released.

Special considerations
If you or someone in your household requires constant water service for medical reasons, please contact the Township immediately at 905-833-5321 to be added to our priority list.
