Township of King, Ont.  There’s snow place like King this winter: the Township has planned a fun lineup of recreation programs (including swim lessons!) for the coolest season of the year. Dabble in musical theatre, try cooking or coding, take a dance class, join an ice hockey league, play sports or explore the wintry outdoors snowshoeing or cross-country skiing! The full listing of programs can be viewed in the new, interactive 2025 Winter Recreation Guide, available online at king.ca/recreation.

Registration for winter recreation and aquatic programs, as well as March Break Camps, opens at 7 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9 at townshipofking.perfectmind.com. The Township’s online recreation registration system is conveniently available 24/7 and allows you to search for programs by day of the week, age, location and area of interest. Registration can also be completed in-person at the Trisan Centre or the King Township Municipal Centre.

Winter programming begins the week of January 13 at recreation facilities across the Township, with the exception of the new Zancor Centre, where programming will begin the week of January 27 following the official opening on January 26. This state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral recreation facility features two NHL-sized ice rinks, a six-lane lap pool, a leisure pool, a multi-purpose athletic fieldhouse and a multi-purpose community room.

Winter recreation program highlights include:

All Ages and Family: snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and maple tree tapping

Preschool: gymnastics, crafting, dance, cooking

Children and Youth: drawing, musical theatre, robotics, flag football, rug hooking, resume writing, girl’s ice hockey leagues plus inclusive programs such as adapted gymnastics and music exploration

Adult: dance fitness, print making, Nordic pole walking, line dancing, badminton, pickleball, ultimate frisbee and a women’s ice hockey league, plus knitting and genealogy workshops

Seniors: Programming for seniors ages 55 years and older is delivered in partnership with the King Township Seniors Board. For more information about a membership and programs, visit king.ca/seniors.

P.A. Day and March Break Camps: Full-day camps for children will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the January 31 P.A. Day, and during the March Break, which runs from March 10-14.

Swim lessons and aquatic leadership programs at the Zancor Centre

The facility’s Aqua Tech Solutions Aquatic Centre will offer 15-minute learn-to-swim lessons for all ages, based on the Ontario Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program which features programming for parent & tots, preschoolers, children and adults, as well as private lessons for children ages three to 12. Aquatic leadership programs to train youth for employment as a swim instructor or lifeguard will also be available.

Starting Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, the Township will offer swim assessments at the Zancor Centre, where a swim instructor will guide children through a series of in-water skills and provide parents with recommendations on the most appropriate swim level to register their child, if they are unsure. The cost is $4 per assessment; pre-registration will be required and opens on December 9 at townshipofking.perfectmind.com.

Swim lesson descriptions and progression charts can be found in the Winter Recreation Guide.

NEW: Simplified inclusion support request process for recreation and aquatic programs

King Township is committed to making recreation and aquatic programs and camps accessible and supportive to individuals of all abilities. Inclusion support staff are available for children with a disability aged four to 15 who may require additional support for activity accommodation, personal support for safety and care, or to assist with their social and recreational experience. Inclusion support is free for residents, pending staff availability.

To request inclusion support, parents/guardians are encouraged to look through the Recreation Guide to find a program that matches their child’s interests and abilities, then register for the one-on-one inclusion support program. They will be required to complete an online questionnaire and name the program and course code they are interested in and complete the Inclusion Participant Intake Form. Once resources for one-on-one support have been confirmed, the Township’s Lead Hand – Aquatics and Inclusion Services, will contact the parent/guardian to advise that their child can be registered in the program. Questions about one-on-one support can be emailed to inclusion@king.ca.
