The Township of King is getting ready for the next significant winter storm expected to begin Dec. 22 and continue into the holiday weekend.

According to Environment Canada, precipitation may begin as rain or snow late Thursday, Dec. 22 before possibly transitioning to rain early on Friday, Dec. 23. Temperatures are expected to drop on Friday, leading to a potential flash freeze for locations that receive rainfall. Strong, potentially damaging, winds with snow are also expected as temperatures drop.

Preparing King’s Roads

To prepare, the Township is inspecting King’s roads for ice build-up and treating leftover ice with salt or removing the ice, where possible.

The Township is checking culverts, cleaning ditch inlets and catch basins. King continues to clean up snow and ice on cul-de-sacs and push back snow as close as possible to curbs/edge of pavement.

Snow Safety Tips

Residents can help make sure everyone gets home safely, including by travelling only if it’s necessary. Here are some tips:

  • Park off the road during the storm. Cars parked on the road make it extremely difficult for plows to clear the street and, in some cases, plows cannot clear the street. Roads need to be clear for travel, especially for emergency vehicles and school buses. King’s bylaw enforcement officers will be ready to assist where required.
  • When plows come to the intersections, give them space to allow them to turn around to finish clearing the street.
  • When plows are doing their finishing pass on the road, they must slow down to ensure the sand-salt mix goes to the centre of the road. Please be patient.
  • Shovel driveway snow away from the road—not onto the road and ensure waste containers are not on the road.
  • Please clear the snow from fire hydrants near your home or business.

Hydrant clearing

King's winter maintenance crews are responsible for clearing over 320 kilometres of roads. The Township's fleet includes two graders, 12 plows—complete with sand and salt units—and six contracted sidewalk plows.

Major roads are serviced within a 12-hour period. Clearance times may be longer when snowfall is exceptionally heavy, there are complications due to freezing rain, many cars are parked on the street or crews are working during peak traffic times.
