Mary Asselstine was elected as Ward 4 Councillor for the Township of King in 2022.
Looking for a community to settle in north of Toronto, Mary and her husband discovered the quaint rural village of Schomberg in 1985 and made Main Street their home. It wasn’t long before Mary was caught up in rural life.
With her growing family, she volunteered on the boards of many established community groups and was actively involved in community events and activities. In addition, she took a leadership role and, recognizing the need and opportunity, helped found three dynamic community groups that are helping to shape the future of King Township today: Dufferin Marsh Nature Connection, Schomberg Community Farm, and Climate Action King. Fundraising became an important part of her advocacy, and she helped raise the equivalent of almost a $1 million to support community building in Schomberg.
Mary has worked for both the Township of King and the Conservation Authorities building a network of friends and contacts. Through her employment and education, she has developed skills in municipal planning, project management and ecology.
Mary will continue to work hard for Ward 4 and will support the vision for King Township, encouraging it towards a more sustainable and community-focused future.
