The importance of Islamic heritage in Canada

Islam has a rich history in Canada, with the first recorded Muslim presence dating back to the late 18th century. It is one of the fastest-growing religions in Canada, with a diverse population that reflects the country’s multicultural fabric. According to the 2021 Census, approximately 3.7% of Canadians identify as Muslim, making Islam the second-largest religion in the country after Christianity.

The majority of Canadian Muslims are immigrants or the children of immigrants, with significant communities originating from South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
