Residents can look forward to more efficient pet licensing with enhanced Animal Services Agreement with the City of Vaughan
Township of King, Ont. — Tails will wag as King Township enters a new chapter in its partnership with the City of Vaughan for the provision of animal services. Starting January 2, 2025, an enhanced Animal Services Agreement will bring more efficient pet licensing to pet owners in King.
Under this new agreement—approved by Council at the December 9 meeting—Vaughan Animal Services (VAS) will begin managing pet licensing for King Township, ensuring efficient processing and compliance with the Township's Animal Control By-law #2016-85, as amended. King and VAS have had an existing partnership since 2011.
Licensing your pet
Licensing pets not only helps easily identify and safely reunite lost pets with their owners but also helps supplement and manage the costs of sheltering animals. Licensing fees ensure sheltered animals get the care they need.
Effective January 2, 2025, pet owners can register or renew their dog and cat licenses in the new online system by visiting king.ca/pets. In King, dogs and cats must wear a licence (numbered tag) on their collar at all times. Dog and cat licences expire annually and must be renewed prior to the anniversary date of purchase to ensure the pet’s information is kept up to date. Existing registered owners will be notified via mail at renewal time through a new automatic notification. As part of the transition, all dogs and cats will be receiving new lifetime tags to replace the existing issued tag and they will begin to be issued in February.
Approved pet licence fees in 2025 are as follows:
- The dog license fee will remain at $25. However, the early incentive discount of $5 before April 15 is discontinued, as renewals will be based on the issuance anniversary date rather than the calendar year.
- Cat licenses will now cost $25 per licence (previously waived).
- The fees for dog and cat licenses for seniors will be reduced from $20 to $12.50.
- The cost of replacement tags will increase from $11 to $14.
- Service animal licenses fees will continue to be waived.
- A new fee of $55 has been introduced for Biting or Menacing Dog Licenses.
Ensure that your pet is always kept safely on leash and is well identified. In combination with the mandatory municipal pet licence, the following identification (ID) methods are also recommended:
- Microchip implant
- Rabies tag
- ID tag with name and owner contact information
