New initiatives and continued commitment highlighted in annual accessibility update
Township of King, Ont. — King Township is making great strides in enhancing accessibility across the community, as highlighted in the newly released 2023 Accessibility Status Report. This report, part of the Township’s 2018-2025 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, underscores significant achievements in removing barriers and promoting inclusivity for all residents.
Key achievements in 2023:
- Comprehensive training: Provided ongoing training for all employees and volunteers on the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
- Policy reviews: Regularly updated policies and procedures to maintain the highest standards of customer service and accessibility.
- Accessible public spaces: Implemented accessible features in parks, recreational trails, public-use eating areas, outdoor play spaces and facilities, including the new Zancor Centre.
- Inclusive programming: Offered adaptive sports and outdoor activities, such as wheelchair basketball, sledge hockey, and programs at the Cold Creek Conservation Area.
- Library enhancements: Increased accessible features and services at the King Township Public Library, including adaptive technology, a homebound program and physical enhancements to library facilities.
- Planning and development: Promoted accessibility policies in new developments through the Planning Division, ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth. This included universal accessible metric targets designed to evaluate the sustainable performance of new development in the Township.
- The Accessibility Advisory Committee reviewed 22 planning applications in 2023 in relation to accessibility and carried out accessibility audits of two Township facilities, the Pottageville Pavilion and Schomberg Community Hall
- Curb-side service continued to be provided to King’s citizens who can’t access the Municipal Centre for services such as commissioning of documents.
- Assistive Listening Devices were made available to people attending Council and Committee meetings at the King Township Municipal Office to amplify the sound system to help them to hear the meetings better.
King Township continues to align its efforts with the 2023-2026 Corporate Strategic Plan, focusing on enriching community well-being and becoming an age-friendly community by 2026.
