King Township declares a Significant Weather Event on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025

King Township has declared a Significant Weather Event, effective Wednesday, February 12 at 6p.m. The Township urges all to use extreme caution as the hazard poses a significant danger to all roadway users.

Significant snowfall is expected to start late this afternoon into Thursday morning with accumulations of 20 cm. The heavy snowfall will reduce visibility and rapidly accumulate on roads. Travel will be challenging, and isolated power outages are possible.

A reminder that plowing occurs in priority sequence—major roads first, followed by neighborhood roads and cul-de-sacs last—to ensure that fire and emergency services can drive on the roads and respond to calls.

Road servicing is typically completed within a 12-hour period after the snowfall is complete, but it can take longer during a Significant Weather Event. Although crews are very conscious in following route schedules, sometimes streets may be missed. To report an oversight, call ServiceKing at 905-833-5321 or email serviceking@king.ca.

Travel Tips:

King’s roads crew is ready to tackle the snow, but they need the community's cooperation to ensure everyone's safety. Here’s how you can help:

  • No parking on roads: Keep streets clear for plows.
  • Give plows space: Let them work safely.
  • Be patient: Plows need time to spread sand/salt mix.
  • Respect snow clearing: Don’t shovel snow onto the street.
  • Take extra care when walking: Wear appropriate footwear, plan your route, check the forecast, and time your walk.

When it comes to travel tips during snowy conditions, it's best to stay home if possible. If you must go out, drive slowly and allow extra time to reach your destination. Handle hills carefully to avoid slipping. Additionally, prepare your vehicle by topping up washer fluid, checking wipers, and carrying an emergency kit.

On Saturday to Sunday another 15-20 cm of snow is expected, adding to the already significant accumulation. Roads crews are closely monitoring the weekend's forecast and the Township will provide updates as necessary.
