An event celebrating the Chinese lived experience and history in York Region takes place on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the King Heritage & Cultural Centre. Standing in the Doorway is a free, family-friendly event open to all and promises an exciting afternoon filled with culture, history and entertainment.

This traveling exhibition, curated by the Markham Museum and the York Region District School Board Museum & Archives, delves into the rich history of Chinese immigration to York Region. Through displays and personal stories, visitors will gain insight into the profound impact the Chinese community has had on the region.

Event Highlights:

  • Lisa's Chinese Square Dance Group will be showcasing traditional dance performances that highlight the grace and beauty of Chinese cultural arts.
  • Fengcai Alumni Drum Troupe will perform dynamic drum routines that are sure to captivate audiences of all ages.
  • Children's Activities: Fun-filled activities for the little ones, ensuring they have a memorable experience.
  • Refreshments: Enjoy a variety of snacks and drinks available throughout the event.
  • Special Demonstration: The Knights in the Classroom will present a unique fencing demonstration that combines history and entertainment.
